A Cooling Tower is a heat rejection device that transfers heat from hot water into the atmosphere. In Cooling Tower Terminology the main objective of a cooling tower is to remove heat from water by evaporating a small portion of water and the treated water is then recycled back through the unit. When then warm water is mixed with cooler air, it releases latent heat of vaporization making the water cool and better for reuse in equipment. Approach: This is the most important measure of the difference between the temperature of the cold water that leaves the tower and the wet-bulb temperature of the air. Once the approach is measured, it determines the operating temperature of the tower and can also help in identifying an ideal tower size and cost.
Bleed Off: When dissolved solid concentrates collect in the water, that circulating water in the tower is discharged to waste because it helps to control the level of waste disposition below the allowable limit. This is an important factor to control solids concentration.
Biocide: Microbes can give foul smelling odor in the water. Biocide is a chemical agent used to treat and control the population of microbes by killing them.
Blowdown: The portion of water that is purposely discharged from the cooling system to control concentrations of impurities like salts, alkali and calcites in the circulating water. It is necessary to keep the water away from harmful solvents.
British Thermal Unit (BTU): It is the measurement of heat energy which raises the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit in the range from 32° F to 212° F.
Cooling Range: This is the measure of temperature between the hot water that enters the tower and the treated cold water that exits it.
Cycles of Concentration: Dissolved solids in makeup water are compared with concentrated solids in the circulating water through evaporation.
Dissolved Solids: There are different solid mixes in water including both ionic and polar. Total solids that have been dissolved into a liquid are called dissolved solids.
Drift: When the water is exposed to air by pressure through the fan, it is discharged to the atmosphere. But drift loss is not the portion of water which is lost by evaporation. Proper tower design can minimize drift loss.
Heat Exchanger: is a device for transferring heat from one substance to another. Heat transfer can be by direct contact, as in a cooling tower, or indirect, as in a shell and tube condenser. Can also be the tube or fin tubed bundles in a wet/dry tower.
Heat Load: When the water is processed, it contains heat that is to be removed from the circulating water within the tower. Heat load equals water circulation rate (gpm) x cooling range x 500. It is expressed in BTU/hr. Both tower size and cost are determined by heat load.
Makeup: Additional water is added to fill the water loss due to causes like bleed off, drift, and evaporation. This additional water is called makeup water.
Pumping Head: A water ejection pump pulls up water from the tower basin to the top of the tower through its entire web. It is called a pumping head.
Ton: Water evaporation is measured by cooling ton that is 15,000 BTUs per hour.
Wet Bulb: This is the lowest temperature that water can reach by evaporation and is measured by psychrometer. It enables to select tower and design.
