Difference between cooling tower and condenser

A Cooling Tower is a heat exchanger containing water and removing excess heat from certain buildings as part of its air conditioning, ventilation, and heating systems. Cooling Towers are used to cool water by bringing air and water into direct contact to eliminate heat lost to the atmosphere. When water and air meet, a small amount of water evaporates, creating a cooling effect. The cooled water is then pumped to the condenser or treatment plant where it absorbs heat.

A Condenser is a Device that Facilitates condensation or returns to the Liquid State, hot gas or steam in a piping system using the evaporation of the water flowing on the pipes. In simple words, an evaporative condenser uses a system of tubes exposed to a regular flow of water to cool and condense a hot gas.

Cooling towers and condensers are heat exchanger devices but work in opposite directions. Capacitors transform a substance from a gas into a liquid by cooling it with air or water from a cooling tower. The substance then releases latent heat during the condensation liquids with a lower energy state than the gases and is then transported to the cooling medium (air or water). The condensers have different sizes and can be used in different areas, such as air conditioning, industrial and chemical systems, power plants and other heat exchange systems.

On the other hand, cooling towers are specialized heat exchangers in both air and water transportation in direct interaction with each other so as to reduce the water temperature that occurs mainly through the anomaly. The energy required to clear water (usually 1% of the water circulating for about 5 ° C from the temperature drop) is withdrawn from the water stream that can be pronounced below the ambient temperature that comes to the temperature of the wet stomach so called. The condenser is a heat exchanger used to condense the refrigerant fluid after it has been heated (due to compression). It was, therefore, the task of the condenser to cool the working fluid after compression.

The condenser allows this (heat dissipation) by a heat transfer into the direct air by forced convection (use of a fan, such as the radiator of the car).

However, if the heat to be extracted is very high or the ambient air is very hot, this is not possible.

We should remember that we are trying here to cool the working fluid using atmospheric air. We cannot cool the working fluid to a temperature lower than that of atmospheric air. If the temperature of the atmospheric air is 40 ° C, we cannot reduce the temperature of the working fluid to less than 40 ° C using atmospheric air, even if the condenser has an efficiency of 100%. The heat capacity of the water is high and allows very good heat transfer. So we're going to use a heat exchanger to exchange heat, like maybe a tube and shell heat exchanger like this one.

Thus, the working fluid and the cooling water come into contact and exchange heat.

And now, heat must be dissipated from the heat exchanger, but how and where? For this, we will use a Cooling Tower.

Hot water from the heat exchanger is introduced into the cooling tower and is allowed to flow. Thus, the hot water will be in contact with the ambient air and the fan installed above will help to eliminate the heat more efficiently.
