Cooling Tower Material and its Main Components
Cooling Towers are an essential feature for many industries as it helps to reject excessive heat. This heat rejection device makes it possible for the industries to establish good working temperatures. There are a number of Cooling Tower Material used for the construction of Cooling Tower by Cooling Tower Manufacturer. Some package Cooling Tower Material for its construction involves the use of fiberglass but in other situations, it may be different. Some clients and project locations require the erected Cooling Tower to use steel, wood, fiberglass or concrete Cooling Tower Material.
Cooling Tower Material

Redwood (wood) was used in the 70s and 80s as a Cooling Tower Material for small capacity Cooling Towers but as wood is becoming a scarce resource it is not used in cooling towers anymore.
Some of the disadvantages that came with using Wood as a material:
- More Drift Loses: Over 1%
- Area Required: Wood requires larger foot space than other materials
- Signification: A Wood eating problem is huge and requires lots of pH adjustment
- Durability: Wood has a lesser lifespan as compared to the other materials used for Cooling Towers and therefore its durability is less.
- Heavy Structure: Wood is heavier as compared to other structure thus it increases the civil cost.
One of the most commonly used Cooling Tower Material is Galvanized Steel. As G-235 hot dipped Galvanized Steel provides corrosion resistance and also is the symbol of great structural strength.
An improved version of Galvanized Steel is the Stainless Steel Cooling Tower Material. Stainless Steel made by Cooling Tower Manufacturer uses 304 Cooling Tower Material as compared to the G-235 Galvanized Steel. The Stainless Steel version is ideally most recommended for Cooling Towers installed in a highly corrosive environment.
Concrete Cooling Tower Material is generally used for very large tower structures.
Some of the important Features of Concrete Towers are:
- Life: The general life of concrete towers is more than 38 to 40 years.
- Time to Erect: These towers are field erected and require more completion time.
- Expensive: These towers are no doubt are expensive but it is compensated by its long life.
FRP Towers (Fiber Reinforced Plastics):
The use of FRP towers is growing faster than one can imagine as more and more plants are replacing the older Cooling Towers with FRP Cooling Tower Material.
Some of the important Features of FRP Towers are:
- Weight: Light Resistance: can resist against chemical water and therefore has a wide pH range, fire resistant thus save the need to have a fire protection system.
- Erection Time: FRP towers need less erection time and cost cheaper than other cooling towers(a win-win situation for the industries)
Components of Cooling Tower

There are mainly two types of components of cooling tower:
Replaceable Components of Cooling Tower
It has the following parts:
- Draft Fans (the air moving compartment)
- Fills (Packaging Materials)
- Hot Water Distribution System
- Drift Eliminators
Non-Replaceable Components of Cooling Tower (or Permanent Structure Type)
- Cold Water Basin
Major Components of Cooling Towers with Functions
Evaporative Cooling Coils
It is one of the most important Components of Cooling Towers since it improves the cooling effect of Cooling Tower.
Splash Fills are the horizontal and vertical staggered patterns used to divide the splash hot water that falls down from the top of the distribution nazzles into fine water droplets and to increase the surface area between water and air.
These are basically plastic corrugated sheets which are joined together to provide a honeycomb-like appearance. Materials used for these types of Components of Cooling Tower are PVC or Polypropylene.
Hot Water Distribution System
this system is used for distributing the hot water inside the towers made by Cooling Tower Manufacturers such as Kool Drop Cooling Tower Pvt. Ltd. to cool the hot processed water. This component includes a distributing basin, headers, disturbing arms, spray nozzle and flow regulating valves.
Cold Water Basin
This water basin designed at the bottom of the tower to collect the resultant cool water and later supply the same water to a suction of water circulating pumps. An important point is that the capacity of the basin must be enough that it holds 3 times the circulating water flow rate in gpm.
The fans are used in the induced draft cooling tower, most commonly used materials are FRP, Aluminum and hot dipped galvanized steel.
They distribute the air flow to the fills equally and also help in retaining the water inside the tower. But the louvers and not required for counterflow cooling towers.
